Notable Yale University Basketball Players
The Yale University athletics program has a rich tradition of excellence, and key hoopsters have been able to build on the legacy they began in New Haven, transitioning from the historic courts of the Ivy League to the bright lights of the NBA. When it comes to basketball, these are some of the school’s most successful alumni:
-
Tony Lavelli (1945–1949): Lavelli not only led the NCAA in scoring at Yale but was also a talented composer and instrumentalist who wrote over a dozen songs during his college years. He was the fourth overall pick in the 1949 NBA Draft, selected by the Celtics, but he refused to sign with the team until they agreed to pay him to play his accordion at halftime. He scored 20 points in his first NBA game, so it seems they made the right decision!
-
Earl “Butch” Graves (1980–1984): At Yale, Graves was a scoring machine! He remains the university's all-time leading scorer and third all-time in the Ivy League, making him one of the program's all-time greats. Excelling in both basketball and football, he was drafted by the Philadelphia 76ers and Dallas Cowboys. He chose the hardwood over the field and played with the Cleveland Cavaliers for a year before pursuing his MBA at Harvard.
-
Chris Dudley (1983–1987): A three-time All-Ivy League player, Dudley, a dominant rebounder and shot-blocker, was drafted by Cleveland in 1987. He carved out a 16-year NBA career, spending time with the Cavaliers, Nets, Trail Blazers, Knicks, and Suns. In 1994, he formed the Chris Dudley Foundation to help diabetic children, an endeavor that earned him the NBA’s Walter Kennedy Citizenship Award for notable contributions to his community.
-
Miye Oni (2016–2019): 2019’s Ivy League Player of the Year was drafted by the Golden State Warriors in 2019 and then traded to the Utah Jazz. He’s known for his impressive work ethic, and his versatility has made him an asset to his teams. In 2022, he signed with the London Lions of the British Basketball League, and to cap off his first season, he clinched a berth in the EuroCup Playoffs. With an active career in progress, the sky’s the limit for this talented athlete!
