The WVU Basketball Schedule

Once you’ve committed to seeing a live game, the biggest decision you’ll make is choosing a worthy opponent. Each Mountaineers season is filled with intense encounters, and every game presents a unique set of challenges, testing the team’s strengths and ability to overcome any weaknesses.

Key Mountaineers Competitors

  • University of Pittsburgh: A quintessential rivalry, "The Backyard Brawl" epitomizes classic college competition between schools in close proximity. This series between the Mountaineers and the Panthers dates back to 1906 and has featured numerous iconic moments. It remains a highlight of the Mountaineers' basketball season, and fans look forward to every meeting!

  • University of Kansas: The Jayhawks and Mountaineers have vastly contrasting play styles, with the vigorous offense of Kansas doing its best to break through West Virginia’s defensive fortress. KU has been a dominant force, so any win against this known powerhouse would be significant. Sometimes, being considered “the underdog” is all it takes to light a fire under a committed club.

  • Kansas State University: The Wildcats' focus on fundamentals is paramount to this interesting pairing. WVU has traditionally had the upper hand, but it only takes one slip-up to reverse the tide. The Mountaineers need to remain steadfast to maintain their edge. If they can maximize their aggressive defense, they can benefit from turnovers and fast breaks.

  • Texas Tech University: This is a Big 12 battle between two programs known for relentless pressure and lockdown tactics. The Red Raiders are a formidable match for the full-court coverage of the Mountaineers. With double the defense, it’s all up to the offense. Who will tire the other team out first? Expect a low-scoring affair overflowing with suspense.

  • Baylor University: West Virginia consistently puts pressure on Baylor’s fast-paced offense. The Bears tend to rely on three-point shooting, which gives the Mountaineers a chance to showcase their adaptability and disrupt Baylor’s typically efficient gameplay. As long as WVU creates their own opportunities, they can prevail!

WVU Coliseum

The 14,000-seat WVU Coliseum serves as the home of the Mountaineers men’s and women’s basketball, volleyball, and gymnastics teams. Since 1970, this stunning facility on campus in Morgantown has impressed guests, but the student section/s (C7–C11 and 226–230) can be very intimidating!

Parking

The main lot is conveniently located at 3450 Monongahela Boulevard, but it fills up quickly, so plan to arrive early. If you want to lock down a space for your vehicle, consider reserving parking when you purchase your West Virginia Mountaineers basketball tickets. We highly recommend taking advantage of this feature to help ensure a smooth arrival on game day.

Alternative Transportation

The Mountain Line Transit Authority operates bus services in Morgantown, and WVU provides campus shuttle services that include stops near the arena, making it an accessible option for students and visitors on game days.

The Morgantown Personal Rapid Transit (PRT) system offers transportation between campuses. Check the West Virginia University website and follow @WVYPRTstatus on X for updates on availability, routes, rates, and current schedules.

Notable West Virginia University Basketball Players

As you sit in the area watching the Mountaineers on the court, you could be getting a glimpse of the next NBA legend or international sports superstar! This list highlights some of the most successful players from the WVU Basketball program:

  • Rod Hundley (1954–1957): A consensus first-team All-American, “Hot Rod” Hundley was picked 1st overall in the 1957 NBA Draft by Cincinnati and was immediately traded to the Lakers. He was known for his flashy style and impressive scoring ability, and in 1960, he recorded a triple-double, rare for the era, and scored a career-high 33 points in one game.

He was a two-time All-Star and retired after six seasons with 3,625 points, 1,420 rebounds and 1,455 assists. Beyond the hardwood, Hundley became a sports broadcaster. In 2000, 43 years after leaving for the NBA, Hundley finished his degree at WVU.

  • Jerry West (1957–1960):  In college, West’s sharpshooting and scoring prowess earned him All-American honors. Selected 2nd overall in the 1960 draft, he joined former WVU teammate Hot Rod Huntley on the Lakers. He was a 14-time All-Star, the Finals MVP in 1969, and the NBA scoring champion in 1970. In 1972, he was the All-Star Game MVP and won an NBA championship.

After retiring as a player, he moved on to coaching in Los Angeles for a few years (1976–1979) before beginning an executive career that would have him serving in the front office with the Lakers, Grizzlies, Warriors, and Clippers

  • Rod Thorn (1960–1963): After initially considering college at Duke University, Thorn ultimately chose to play at WVU. Like fellow West Virginia native Jerry West, Thorn wore #44, and it seemed to suit him. He garnered the attention of the NBA and was chosen 2nd overall by the Baltimore Bullets (now Washington Wizards) and was named to the All-Rookie First Team.

After retiring as a player in 1971, he moved on to coaching, then to the Chicago Bulls’ front office, where he oversaw the acquisition of Michael Jordan in 1984. He served as the NBA's Executive VP of Basketball Operations from 1986 to 2000 and President of Basketball Operations from 2013–2015.

  • Ron "Fritz" Williams (1964–1968): The SoCon Player of the Year in 1968, Williams, a talented guard, was drafted by San Francisco that same year. He was also a standout defensive back on the gridiron, selected by the Dallas Cowboys in the 1968 NFL Draft, but opted to join the ranks of the National Basketball Association instead.

In the NBA, he was renowned for his adept ball-handling and playmaking, bringing a combination of scoring and passing. He played professional hoops for eight seasons, contributing to the Milwaukee Bucks and Los Angeles Lakers as well as the Warriors.
