About Wardruna
Formed in 2003 in Bergen, Norway, Wardruna set out to explore the ancient musical traditions of the Norse. Founding members Einar Selvik, Gaahl, and Lindy-Fay Hella chose to utilize Nordic instruments like the tagelharpa, lur, and Kravik lyre and embraced noises made by nature. This unique blend connects their music to its ancient roots and lends authenticity to their sound. Furthermore, it ensures that elements of the old world endure through their efforts.
Wardruna first captured widespread attention when their music was included in the hit TV series Vikings. Their commitment to Norse culture and esoteric traditions is vividly expressed on their albums, notably the Runaljod trilogy. These works, conceptually linked to Norse runes and mythology, enriched their discography and brought them international acclaim, with Runaljod - Ragnarok reaching number one on Billboard's World Albums chart.
Wardruna has solidified their standing in the music world with notable appearances at international festivals like Roadburn and Hellfest. Despite the departure of Gaahl in 2015, the band continued to thrive, driven by Einar Selvik’s collaborations, including “Voluspá,” recorded with the Bergen Philharmonic Orchestra and the Grieg Choir, conducted by Edward Gardner. This ability to blend the traditional with the contemporary has kept their music relevant and revered.
