The Vanderbilt Basketball Schedule

The Vanderbilt men's basketball schedule features strategic conference confrontations, run-ins with historic rivals, and matches against up-and-coming contenders. Games involve a variety of tactical tests, but some opponents stand out in terms of intrigue and potential.

Key Commodores Competitors

  • University of Tennessee: The Vols bring physical, aggressive play to the court, which shakes up Vanderbilt’s strategic approach. It requires the club to combine efficient offense with solid defense to combat the attack from Tennessee, resulting in really engaging encounters.

  • University of Kentucky: The Wildcats rely on rapid play with a strong presence in the paint. Vanderbilt is used to a more deliberate, methodical strategy, but they need to keep up with the aggressive style to compete. Kentucky has the edge, but each meeting is anyone’s game.

  • University of Alabama: Contests between the Crimson Tide and the Commodores are exhibits of sheer strength and competitive spirit. Alabama’s assertive style is pitted against Vanderbilt's ingenuity, and the tension in the arena is palpable.

  • University of Mississippi: Vanderbilt's battles with Ole Miss test the players’ agility and basketball IQ. The Rebels' swift movements create a dynamic challenge, but the Commodores have the ability to counter the onslaught with calculated maneuvers.

  • Auburn University: When the Tigers face off against the 'Dores, their aggressive approach stands in direct contrast to Vanderbilt’s steadfastness. Auburn's raw energy and offensive vigor threaten to wear down the defenders. Expect a showcase of athleticism in these showdowns.

  • Jan van Breda Kolff (1971–1974): A versatile player for the Commodores and drafted 14th overall in 1974 by the Trail Blazers, van Breda Kolff's NBA career spanned seven seasons. After retiring as a player, he opted to mentor up-and-coming athletes by becoming a coach, with jobs at Cornell, Pepperdine, and his alma mater, Vanderbilt. He also served as an assistant coach for New Orleans.

  • Jeff Turner (1979–1984): A renowned power forward, Turner’s shooting skills and versatility impressed the New Jersey Nets, who picked him 17th overall in the 1984 NBA Draft. • Will Perdue (1983–1988): In college, Perdue was the Southeastern Conference Player of the Year and SEC Male Athlete of the Year in 1988. That same year, he was drafted 11th overall by the Chicago Bulls. During his 13-year NBA career, he contributed significantly to the Bulls' and San Antonio Spurs' championship teams and became a four-time NBA champion.

  • Damian Jones (2013–2016): Drafted 30th overall by Golden State in 2016, Jones became a two-time NBA champion with the Warriors during his first and second seasons in the league.
