About Queen

In 1968, vocalist and bassist Tim Staffell and guitarist Brian May decided to put a band together. They were soon joined by a drummer named Roger Taylor, and the trio called themselves Smile. They had built up a decent local following when Staffell decided to leave the group. That opened the door for an acquaintance and intriguing young vocalist, Farrokh "Freddie" Bulsara, to step in.

The Freddie Mercury Years

After coming together in London in 1970, the newly named “Freddie Mercury,” Brian May, Roger Taylor, and John Deacon, rapidly ascended to rock stardom as Queen. With a unique blend of progressive rock, hard rock, and glam rock, they gained significant attention with their second album, Queen II, in 1974, followed by international acclaim with Sheer Heart Attack the same year.

The band’s distinctive sound, a fusion of elaborate harmonies and complex musical compositions, was influenced by diverse artists like The Beatles, Led Zeppelin, and David Bowie. Their theatrical stage presence, reminiscent of the grandeur of opera, set them apart in the rock music scene.

"Bohemian Rhapsody," one of their most iconic songs, topped the UK Singles Chart and remains one of the best-selling singles of all time. They also achieved number-one status with albums like A Night at the Opera, The Game, and Innuendo.

A New Era

Following the death of frontman, Freddie Mercury, in 1991, band members picked themselves up and continued performing, but something was missing. They did not go out on a full tour again until 19 years later when they combined forces with Bad Company’s Paul Rodgers in 2005.

Then, in 2009, Brian May and Roger Taylor served as guest mentors on the 8th season of “American Idol.” They took notice of Adam Lambert's electrifying performances week after week. His stirring rendition of "Mad World" by Tears for Fears particularly captivated them, and they began to discuss the possibility of performing with him.

Taylor contacted the show, and reintroductions were made. In 2011, Queen and Lambert performed together for the first time at the MTV Europe Music Awards. The chemistry was undeniable, and the audience roared with approval. This marked the beginning of a successful partnership.

While Freddie Mercury is truly irreplaceable, Adam Lambert has proven himself a worthy successor, keeping Queen's music alive and inspiring new generations of fans. Their enduring appeal as a live act is a testament to their timeless music and the indelible mark they have left on the world of rock and beyond.
