About Portugal. The Man
Portugal. The Man came together in Wasilla, Alaska, where friends and former Anatomy of A Ghost bandmates John Gourley and Zach Carothers formed the core. The distinct name, inspired by David Bowie and his alter ego Ziggy Stardust, represents the members as one entity. Following a move to Portland, Oregon, musicians were assembled and the group began producing demos. By the end of the year, they embarked on a U.S. tour.
Without a rest, they went to work recording their debut album, Waiter: "You Vultures!. It was released in January of 2006, and the distinctive fusion of psychedelic rock, alternative, and experimental sounds set it apart and captured the attention of manager Rich Holtzman, who helped them establish a five-year plan. Over the next four years, they dropped four more albums, supporting their studio efforts with tours and festival shows.
In 2011, Portugal. The Man released In the Mountain in the Cloud, their first album on Atlantic Records. Two years later, Evil Friends peaked at number 28 on the US Billboard 200. Their biggest payoff came in 2017, when "Feel It Still," a track on Woodstock, became a hit single and garnered international acclaim. The song reached number one on multiple Billboard charts, spent 45 weeks on the Hot 100, and earned the group a Grammy.
Portugal. The Man released their ninth studio album, Chris Black Changed My Life, in June 2023. Their commitment to exploring diverse musical landscapes, coupled with their dedication to environmental and social causes, positions them as effective cultural influencers. As they continue to experiment with their sound and refine their artistry, as long as they maintain the essence that has won them a dedicated global following, they are poised to remain at the forefront of the indie rock scene.
