About Patti LaBelle

Patti LaBelle was born in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, on May 24, 1944, and her talent has shone brightly since her days in the choir at Beulah Baptist Church. In the 1960s, she gained recognition with the Bluebelles. Initially named The Ordettes, the girl group gained attention with hits like "I Sold My Heart to the Junkman" and "Down the Aisle (The Wedding Song)."

The ladies rebranded as Labelle in the 1970s, and their transformation marked a significant turning point. They achieved mainstream success with their hit single "Lady Marmalade," which not only topped the charts but also became a cultural phenomenon. The song's success propelled Ms. LaBelle into the spotlight and laid the foundation for solo stardom.

By the 1980s, her album I'm in Love Again not only earned her a Grammy Award but also saw her single "If Only You Knew" make its mark on the Billboard charts. She earned a Grammy Award for Best Female R&B Vocal Performance for the ballad "New Attitude." In 1986, Winner In You soared to the top spot on the Billboard 200, and her duet with Michael McDonald, “On My Own,” peaked at number one on the Billboard Hot 100.

Patti LaBelle’s achievements have been recognized with an array of accolades, including Grammy honors, NAACP Image Awards, and a BET Lifetime Achievement Award. In 1993, she was named the Favorite Soul/R&B Female Artist at the American Music Award, and in 2008, Rolling Stone included her on their list of the “100 Greatest Singers of All Time.” She has been inducted into the Grammy, Hollywood, Apollo Theater, and Black Music & Entertainment Walks of Fame.

Live Moments That Made Headlines

Patti LaBelle has given the world some of its most unforgettable live shows. Whether she’s flying solo or gracing the stage with other artists, she makes the moment memorable. These have been some of her most iconic performances:

  • April 1986: "On My Own" wasn’t intended to be a duet, but Patti LaBelle enlisted Michael McDonald, known for his work with The Doobie Brothers and Steely Dan, to add depth with his buttery baritone. The singers recorded their parts separately but came together on The Tonight Show to perform their hit together for the first time.

  • April 2000: Miss LaBelle brought the house down at Radio City Music Hall in New York City with an earth-shaking, soul-stirring version of "You Are My Friend” at the Essence Awards. Backed by a full choir and a stellar band, she took the crowd to church and got fans on their feet! This was Patti LaBelle at her absolute best.

  • February 2002: At the 44th Grammy Awards, the audience was treated to a show-stopping performance of “Lady Marmalade.” Patti LaBelle was, of course, the original singer of the hit song, but Christina Aguilera, Lil' Kim, Mya, P!NK, and Missy Elliott had recorded a modern rendition for Moulin Rouge. When the women combined forces, magic happened!

  • June 2014: After Midnight was a dazzling jukebox musical on Broadway at the Brooks Atkinson Theatre. Miss LaBelle joined the show during the final month of its run. At the 68th Tony Awards, she took the stage with Fantasia Barrino, Gladys Knight, and the rest of the talented cast to deliver a marvelous medley of the show’s classic tunes.

  • September 2020: In the midst of the pandemic, Timbaland and Swizz Beatz created a virtual vocal competition series known as the Verzuz Battles. One of the featured pairings was Gladys Knight and Patti Labelle, but during their duel, they brought out special guest Dionne Warwick to perform the powerful anthem “Superwoman,” and the trio subsequently broke the Internet.
