The NC State Basketball Schedule
It’s important to figure out which adversary is most likely to meet your expectations and make game day as good as can be. The NCSU basketball schedule is filled with diverse and competitive matchups. Whether you want to see the Wolfpack take on a traditional rival, clash with conference powerhouses, or test their mettle against teams outside the ACC, you’ve got options.
Key NCSU Competitors
-
University of North Carolina: This deeply rooted in-state rivalry goes back to the early 20th century but gained momentum when both squads ended up in the Atlantic Coast Conference. Now, games between the Tar Heels and the Wolfpack not only put state bragging rights on the line but also help determine the pecking order in the conference.
-
Duke University: Another in-state rival in the ACC, the Blue Devils represent top-tier talent and tradition, making each game against them a high-profile event. NC State has been recognized for their physicality, while Duke is known for their disciplined approach. Fans eagerly await each encounter, characteristic of Duke's rich basketball heritage.
-
University of Louisville: While not as entrenched in history as some other rivalries, face-offs between the Cardinals and the Wolfpack measure the clubs’ ability to adapt to their opponents’ playing style. Can NC State handle intense defensive schemes and match Louisville's quick transitions and athletic play? It’s always interesting to see how things play out.
-
University of Miami: The Hurricanes' dynamic and versatile play style makes each game an unpredictable affair. The Wolfpack needs to adjust to Miami's tempo, which often oscillates between fast breaks and calculated half-court sets. These duels frequently result in a back-and-forth that keeps spectators on the edge of their seats until the final buzzer.
-
Clemson University: The Tigers offer a gritty, hard-fought contest commonly decided by hustle plays and critical stops. NCSU must figure out how to combat Clemson's defense and throw a wrench into their rebounding. Their conference standing depends on it! But with their strategic offensive execution and renowned resilience, anything is possible.

Notable NC State Wolfpack Men's Basketball Players

-
Tom Burleson (1971–1974): Burleson was a dominant center whose imposing presence in the paint contributed to NC State’s success. In 1974, he was selected third overall by the Seattle SuperSonics (now OKC Thunder) and played in the NBA until 1981. As if his 7-foot-2 stature wasn’t enough to intimidate his opponents, his shot-blocking and rebounding skills did the trick. impact on both the collegiate and professional levels solidifies his place in basketball history.
-
David Thompson (1972–1975): Considered a basketball prodigy, Thompson led the Wolfpack to an undefeated season in 1973 and was a three-time consensus All-American. Drafted first overall by the Atlanta Hawks in 1975, he decided to sign with the Denver Nuggets and became one of the league’s greatest talents. Renowned for his high-flying athleticism and scoring prowess, he was the 1976 Rookie of the Year and a four-time NBA All-Star.
-
Monte Towe (1972–1975): Standing 5’7” tall, Towe was told he couldn’t have a career in basketball. He proved the naysayers wrong when he helped get NC State to the 1974 NCAA Championship. After being drafted by the Atlanta Hawks, he joined David Thompson in signing with the Denver Nuggets. His time in the ABA was short, but he moved on to coaching, where he has helped others to believe that anything is possible if you put your mind to it.
-
Sidney Lowe (1979–1983): Lowe, a tenacious point guard, was a pivotal player on the NCSU 1983 NCAA Championship team. He was then selected by the Chicago Bulls as the first pick of the second round in the ‘83 draft and went on to play with multiple teams over the next four seasons. After hanging up his jersey, he returned to NC State as head coach in 2006. Now, he’s back in the NBA, serving as assistant coach with the Cleveland Cavaliers.
-

The Detroit Pistons selected him in the 4th round of the 1986 draft but released him prior to preseason. He made it onto the Atlanta Hawks, and in his rookie year, he won the All-Star Weekend Slam Dunk Contest.
