Notable Morehead State University Basketball Players
The Morehead State athletic program has been a training ground for several players who have successfully transitioned from the college courts to the professional leagues. This list highlights notable Eagles alumni who have left their mark on the NBA, taking their skills, determination, and the spirit of Morehead State to basketball's biggest stage:
-
Steve Hamilton (1954–1958): Hamilton set records and earned accolades on the court at Morehead State, leading to a 1958 draft selection by the Lakers. However, he spent only one season in the NBA before opting to exercise his exceptionally wide wingspan on the mound with the Cleveland Indians. He made his MLB debut in 1961 and lasted a dozen years in the league, becoming one of two athletes to compete in both the NBA Finals and the World Series.
-
Henry Akin (1963–1965): A two-time First-Team All-OVC honoree during his college days, Akin was chosen by the NY Knicks in the 1965 NBA Draft and took his scoring skills and defensive dominance to the Big Apple. The following year, he was selected by the Seattle SuperSonics in the expansion draft, but injuries kept his playing career brief. After hanging up his sneakers, he served as a scout for the Sonics, scoping out players in 200–250 games over five years.
-
Lamar Green (1965–1969): Green was a pivotal power-forward for Morehead State University, known for his remarkable rebounding and scoring abilities. Chosen by the Phoenix Suns in the 1969 draft, he stuck with the franchise for five years until the Jazz picked him up in the 1974 NBA Expansion Draft. He also saw 51 games playing for the Virginia Squires of the ABA before his professional basketball career came to an end in 1975.
-
Bob McCann (1984–1987): McCann transferred to Morehead State from Upsala College, a private institution in East Orange, New Jersey. The move proved to be a good one, as he was named the OVC Player of the Year in 1987 before being drafted by the Milwaukee Bucks. His NBA stint spanned five years and five teams, including the Mavericks, Pistons, Timberwolves, Bullets (Wizards), and Raptors. He also played in the USBL and the international leagues.
-
Kenneth Faried (2007–2011): Dubbed "the Manimal" for his relentless energy, Faried led the Ohio Valley Conference in rebounding during his sophomore and junior years. He was a two-time OVC Player of the Year, three-time OVC Defensive Player of the Year, and a Consensus Second-Team All-American. Drafted by the Denver Nuggets, he spent eight seasons in the NBA, earned a gold medal with Team USA, and played in China, Moscow, Puerto Rico, and Mexico.
