About Green Day

Formed in 1986 by Billie Joe Armstrong and Mike Dirnt, Green Day emerged from the punk scene in Berkeley, California. Initially performing under the name "Sweet Children," the group adopted the moniker Green Day, slang for a day spent indulging in marijuana.

Their early music was released on Lookout! Records, which set the foundation for their mainstream breakthrough. The band's major-label debut, Dookie, released in 1994, catapulted them into the spotlight, as people compared their vibe to the raw energy of classic punk bands like the Ramones, the Sex Pistols, and The Clash.

The band’s impact on music has been marked by both commercial success and critical acclaim. Dookie alone sold over 10 million copies in the U.S., signaling their substantial influence on 1990s punk rock. Their continued success was evident with albums like American Idiot and 21st Century Breakdown, each securing the top spot on the Billboard 200 chart.

After conquering everything from the DIY punk scene of Berkeley to the Broadway stage, Green Day continues to evolve while staying true to their punk rock roots. Their legacy transcends chart-topping albums and awards—they reignited the punk spirit for a generation, inspiring countless other musicians and leaving a lasting mark on the industry.
