About Engelbert Humperdinck
Arnold George “Gerry” Dorsey first stepped onto the stages of Leicester nightclubs and pubs with his saxophone in the 1950s. Despite health challenges stemming from a severe bout of tuberculosis, he was determined to make it in the entertainment industry. Guided by manager Gordon Mills, he borrowed his stage name from a 19th-century German composer. The intriguing moniker, Engelbert Humperdinck, promised to be as unforgettable as his distinctive baritone.
In 1967, his debut record, Release Me, garnered significant attention. The title track dominated the UK charts and made inroads in the US, reaching number four on the Billboard Hot 100. It famously blocked The Beatles from claiming another number-one hit with "Penny Lane." "The Last Waltz" also made a major impact, selling over a million copies, and his career began to flourish as multiple chart-toppers came with consistent international acclaim.
By the end of the decade, he was hosting a successful variety show that aired in Europe and North America. The Engelbert Humperdinck Show centered him amongst contemporaries like Tom Jones, Jack Benny, Milton Berle, Ray Charles, Lena Horne, Liberace, and Dionne Warwick. TV appearances made him a household name, and he became a touring sensation, sometimes performing hundreds of shows in a single year.
Humperdinck’s flashy style and elaborate stage designs caught the attention of Las Vegas promoters, and before long, he was booking regular gigs on The Strip. In 1976, “After the Lovin” was named the “most played jukebox song of the year” and landed him a coveted slot to perform on The Tonight Show Starring Johnny Carson. This helped cement his reputation as a must-see performer and contributed to the success of his Broadway shows at the Minskoff Theatre.
He has always had a knack for sensing shifting musical styles, adapting his sound to remain relevant, making him a consistent commercial success. He kept himself in the public eye with guest appearances at major events and on popular television series. Whether he was being interviewed on a talk show or singing the Star Spangled Banner at the Daytona 500, he knew how to maximize every opportunity. His appeal transcended genres and generations.
With over seven decades in the business, he has earned countless accolades and amassed a collection of trophies. The American Recording Academy recognized him with Grammy nominations for After the Lovin (1978) and Always Hear the Harmony: The Gospel Sessions (2004). He won a Golden Globe for Entertainer of the Year and was immortalized with a star on the Hollywood. A star in front of the Las Vegas Paris Hotel and Casino soon followed.
Humperdinck has released over 60 studio albums, many certified gold and platinum. He is credited with revitalizing the adult contemporary genre, influencing artists across various music landscapes. Duets with Elton John, Gene Simmons, Willie Nelson, Johnny Mathis, Il Divo, and other heavy hitters have illustrated his versatility and the respect he has earned from his peers. His latest tour is a celebration of his lasting legacy and promises to be a fitting tribute to a lifetime of achievements.
