Notable College of Charleston Basketball Players
When you see the Cougars on the court, you could be getting a look at the next legend! The C of C athletic program has a history of nurturing players who successfully transition from college basketball to careers in the NBA and other professional leagues. These talented individuals have been among the standouts:
-
Anthony Johnson (1993–1997): The first player from the College of Charleston to make it to the NBA, Johnson was selected by the Sacramento Kings and carved out a solid career contributing to several teams. In 2002, he became the first former D-League player to play in the NBA Finals when his New Jersey Nets faced the LA Lakers. Then, while playing for the Indiana Pacers, during Game 6 of the 2006 playoffs, he scored a career-high 40 points against the Nets.
-
Andrew Goudelock (2008–2011): Known for his sharpshooting abilities with the Cougars, Goudelock was the 2011 SoCon Player of the Year. After being drafted by the LA Lakers and the Harlem Globetrotters, he made an immediate impact as a backup point guard, standing in for the injured Steve Blake. In 2012, he signed with the Sioux Falls Skyforce, and the following year, he was named the NBA D-League MVP. He also made big moves in the international leagues.
-
Joe Chealey (2013–2018): A two-time First-Team All-CAA selection, Chealey scored 32 points in an overtime victory that led the Cougars to the NCAA Tournament. After graduating from the College of Charleston, he played with the Charlotte Hornets and their G-League team, the Greensboro Swarm, before moving on to the Polish Basketball League and the Israeli Basketball Premier League. Since the summer of 2023, he has been an active player with Hapoel Eilat.
-
Jarrell Brantley (2015–2019): The 2016 CAA Rookie of the Year and 2019 First-Team All-CAA selection worked out with multiple professional teams following his days with the Cougars. He was drafted by the Indiana Pacers and subsequently traded to the Utah Jazz, making his NBA debut in October of 2019. In 2021, he signed a contract with UNICS Kazan of the VTB United League and has since played in Puerto Rico, New Zealand, and Japan.
-
Grant Riller (2016–2020): A three-time First-Team All-CAA selection, Riller's explosive scoring ability and leadership were his hallmarks at the College of Charleston. He was drafted by the Charlotte Hornets, and has been honing his skills in the G League with the Greensboro Swarm, the Hornets’ minor league club, as well as the Delaware Blue Coats, a Philadelphia 76ers affiliate, and the Texas Legends, part of the Dallas Mavericks franchise.
