About James Taylor
James Taylor has been a defining voice in music since the late 1960s. Born into a musical family in Boston, Massachusetts, he picked up his first guitar as a child and formed a band with his brother Alex. His big break came after moving to London, where he became the first non-British act signed to The Beatles' label, Apple Records. The release of his eponymous debut album in 1968 signified the start of an illustrious career that would span several decades.
Taylor crafted a sound deeply rooted in folk traditions but also distinctly his own. He has produced multiple chart-toppers, earned countless awards, received the Presidential Medal of Freedom and Kennedy Center Honors, and, among other accolades, was inducted into both the Songwriters and Rock and Roll Halls of Fame. He is a pioneer of the singer-songwriter genre and helped bring folk and soft rock to mainstream audiences, influencing countless other artists.
Looking ahead, fans of James Taylor can expect a continuation of his profound musical and cultural impacts. His openness about personal struggles and advocacy for mental health continue to endear him to audiences worldwide. His legacy, deeply embedded in the fabric of American music, promises more inspiring stories and soulful songs. Live Moments That Made Headlines
James Taylor’s live shows are legendary, but he still seems to prefer stripped-down sets to elaborate productions, letting the music shine. As a folk-rock singer-songwriter, this approach has served him well, and his earnest style suits his material and helps connect him with his audience. He always captivates concertgoers, but these performances, heavy on collaboration and cultural impact, have stood out:
-
November 13, 1971: For the In Concert series on the BBC, James Taylor recorded “You’ve Got a Friend” with the song’s writer, Carole King, on piano. King has said she penned the tune as a response to Taylor’s lyric, “I've seen lonely times when I could not find a friend,” from “Fire and Rain.” Both artists won Grammy awards for their versions of the hit, and Taylor’s rendition reached the top spot on the Billboard Hot 100.
-
September 19–23, 1979: Many performances from “No Nukes: The Muse Concerts For a Non-Nuclear Future” at Madison Square Garden have become classics. Taylor performed “Takin' It to the Streets" with the Doobie Brothers, “Mockingbird” with Carly Simon, and in a poignant moment, brought John Hall, Graham Nash, and Carly Simon on stage to sing Bob Dylan’s “The Times They Are A-Changin’.”
-
January 11–20, 1985: Before playing the first-ever Rock in Rio festival, Taylor had considered retiring, but the massive show set him straight. He joined a lineup that included George Benson, The Go-Gos, Iron Maiden, The B-52's, Ozzy Osbourne, AC/DC, Rod Stewart, Yes, and Queen. In addition to a solo set that opened with “Long Ago and Far Away” and ended with “How Sweet It Is (To Be Loved By You),” he joined Sting for “Feel Her Up.”
-
May 30, 1998: Taylor recorded his concert at the Beacon Theater in New York City for a live DVD, so his greatest hits featured prominently in the show. He also squeezed in “Everyday” by Buddy Holly, “Wasn't That a Mighty Storm” by Tom Rush, “Handy Man” by Jimmy Jones, and “Up On the Roof” by The Drifters. His three-song encore ended with “Not Fade Away” by The Crickets, rounding out a wonderful list of crowd-pleasers.
-
April 12, 2011: Celebrating the 120th anniversary of one of the world’s most renowned venues, James Taylor took the stage at Carnegie Hall. In addition to serving as the evening’s MC, he performed “Sweet Baby James,” “Carolina in My Mind,” and “How Sweet It Is” between sets from Barbara Cook, Steve Martin, Bette Midler, Diana Reeves, and Sting. Taylor ended the show with “Over the Rainbow,” filling the grand hall with warmth and nostalgia.
-
November 22, 2011: Closing out her “Speak Now” tour at Madison Square Garden, Taylor Swift shared a story with the audience about being told she was named after James Taylor. Following the intimate storytime, Ms. Swift brought her fellow Taylor on stage to join her on “Fire and Rain.” The two harmonized beautifully, as they strummed acoustic guitars from opposite ends of a couch.
-
August 6, 2015: At Fenway Park, ticket holders in Boston got to see Taylor and his All-Star Band pay tribute to his beloved Red Sox with "Angels of Fenway," a song from the Before This World album. But that wasn’t the only highlight of the special homecoming show! During the encore, he brought his co-headliner, Bonnie Raitt, on stage. The two sang “Knock on Wood” and “Shed a Little Light'' together, delighting everyone in attendance.
-
August 22, 2021: At the Lakeview Amphitheater in Syracuse, New York, James Taylor introduced his special guest, Jackson Browne, and the two delighted the audience with their version of the 1977 hit “Running on Empty.” He brought Browne back on stage for his encore, and the duo performed “You’ve Got a Friend” as well as the Eagles’ hit “Take It Easy” before Taylor closed the show with “You Can Close Your Eyes.”
